Your Referral

A current referral is always required for each consultation. You will not be able to claim your Medicare Rebate if you are seen without a valid referral. Please ensure the practice has received your referral prior to or on the day of your appointment otherwise your appointment may need to be rescheduled. Referrals can be obtained from your general practitioner, optometrist or other medical specialist. Unless specified, referrals from your GPs and optometrists are current for 12 months while specialist referrals only remain current for 3 months.

A difficulty may arise when a patient has been referred with an indefinite referral for a particular condition and subsequently develops another different eye problem. The previous referral does not cover the different condition and a new referral must be obtained for that new condition.

If you are unsure of whether your referral is current please check with our helpful reception staff and they can advise you of the need or currency of the referral that we have on file.

It is the responsibility of the patient to ensure that they have a current referral for each consultation or have organised to have one sent to us by their referrer.
